I'm Nicole Gulevski, Edmen Community Staffing Services' Operations Manager, and this year marked a significant milestone in my life. I returned to work after maternity leave, balancing the joys and challenges of raising two little ones while managing a demanding role. I want to share my experience and insights on the importance of flexibility, finding the right culture and supportive leaders, advocating for promotions, and creating a welcoming environment for working parents, especially mothers.
Navigating Parenthood and Career: My Return to Work Journey at Edmen

The Challenges of Parenthood and Career
Being a parent is a full-time job in itself, and when you add a demanding career to the mix, it can be overwhelming at times. Balancing late-night feedings with early morning meetings and diaper changes with project deadlines is not for the faint-hearted. But it's possible, and it's essential to acknowledge the challenges and give yourself grace.
The Importance of Flexibility
One of the key factors that allowed me to successfully transition back into the workforce was the flexibility that Edmen Community Staffing Services was able to offer. Working three days a week allowed me to spend quality time with my children while staying engaged in my career. Flexibility isn't just a perk for parents; it's a necessity. It enables us to be both dedicated parents and committed professionals. Of course, it’s important to recognise that some roles do need to be full time due to their nature and demands, so going back to work may on reduced hours may create opportunity to explore other roles within the organisations.
Finding the Right Culture and Supportive Leaders
Returning to work is made more accessible when you're part of an organisation that values and supports working parents. At Edmen, I am fortunate to have a supportive leader who understands the demands of parenthood. The culture here encourages open communication and accommodates the unique needs of parents. This support system is invaluable and makes all the difference in balancing work and family life.
Advocating for Promotions
Returning parents, particularly mothers, often worry about their career growth being stunted. It's essential to remember that we still want to advance in our careers. This year I was nominated to participate in the PeopleIN Emerging Leader Program, which is a testament to the fact that parenthood doesn't diminish our potential. We can achieve our career aspirations while raising a family.
Tips for Workers Returning to the Workforce
Know What's Right for You: There's no one-size-fits-all approach to balancing parenthood and a career. Do what feels right for you and your family. Whether it's pursuing a promotion or maintaining your current role, make choices that align with your priorities.
Seek Support and Flexibility: Look for employers who offer flexibility and support for working parents. Discuss your needs openly and find solutions that work for both you and your employer.
Believe in Yourself: Parenthood doesn't diminish your skills or potential. Have confidence in your abilities and don't hesitate to pursue your career goals.
For Employers
Don't Underestimate Parents: Parents, especially mothers, have an incredible ability to get things done. They bring unique skills, such as time management, multitasking, and empathy, to the workplace. Recognize and value these strengths.
Create a Parent-Friendly Culture: Foster a workplace culture that supports parents through flexible work arrangements, and employee assistance programs. Encourage open communication and provide opportunities for career growth.
Returning to work after maternity leave can be a challenging but rewarding journey. It's crucial for both employees and employers to prioritise flexibility, support, and an inclusive work culture that allows parents to thrive professionally and personally. Remember, parenthood doesn't limit our potential—it enhances it. So, whether you're aiming for a promotion or simply enjoying the balance between work and family, embrace your unique journey, and keep moving forward.
