Are you considering a career as a youth worker, or have you recently started your journey in this field?
If so, you may have heard about something called an "Active Night Shift." In this blog post, Rana Kutup, Edmen Service Leader, sheds light on what an Active Night Shift entails, what's expected of you, and the vital importance of adhering to a code of conduct designed to protect the safety of both you and the young people you're responsible for.
An Active Night Shift, often abbreviated as NS (Night Shift), is a crucial aspect of youth work. It's a responsibility that involves staying awake throughout the night to ensure the well-being and safety of the young people under your care. Active Night Shift is not to be confused with a Sleep Over Shift, where Youth Workers can sleep.
As a youth worker, you'll be expected to uphold a strict code of conduct. This code is not just a set of rules; it's a pledge to fulfill your duty of care and protect the safety and welfare of both the young people and the communities you serve.
Here are some key aspects of the code of conduct that are particularly important during Active Night Shifts:
1. Staying Awake and Aware
During an Active Night Shift, you must remain awake and vigilant. This is non-negotiable because it's the only way to ensure the safety of the young people in your care. It's essential to be aware of their movements and your surroundings to maintain a safe environment.
2. Detailed Shift Notes and Hourly Observations
One of the most critical aspects of an Active Night Shift is making detailed, accurate and factual notes. These notes are essential, as they are legal documents and are vital in providing a timeline of events, should any unexpected situations arise. You will be expected to record hourly observations throughout your shift as well as complete end of shift notes. You’ll have access to your dedicated Edmen support crew who can offer timely feedback and guidance to help build your confidence writing great shift notes.
3. Completing Shift Tasks
You'll have specific tasks and duties allocated to your shift. It's crucial to complete these tasks and work as a team with your colleagues. However, there may be legitimate reasons why you can't complete all tasks, such as handling lengthy escalations. In such cases, it's important to hand over any unfinished tasks to the next shift and provide a clear explanation. This minimises misunderstandings and conflicts.
4. Responsible Use of Personal Phones
Your personal phone should only be used for direct work-related and emergency personal purposes. Activities like personal phone calls, social media use, streaming music and shows, or using air pods are not permitted during your shift as they take away your attention.
Edmen Community Staffing Youth Workers have 24-hour access to a supportive team who they can contact for support and guidance, so they never have to feel alone.
