If you applied for a new job in 2020, chances are, your initial, or complete interview process was completed via Zoom - the now, infamous video conferencing platform that overtook Skype to be the go-to for work catch-ups, meetings and interviews.
With Covid-19 restrictions across Australia continuing to impact our ability to safely interact face to face many companies are sticking with the video platform for interviews - including here at Edmen Community. We’ve popped a handy guide together with what to do and the all-important what not to do so you can ace your next online job interview.
1. Be professional
- Act as if you are physically attending the interview, think; personal hygiene, outfit, hair, make up, beard grooming - you get the picture!
2. Environment -
Set up your camera in a well-lit part of your home that is private. If you share with others or have kids try to arrange to be home alone or have someone mind the kids.
3. Test your tech
- Make sure your camera is working and you have a microphone that works well. Try to use a stable internet connection, if your internet connection can be patchy at home and it’s safe to do so, use a family member or friends internet instead. Although Zoom can be used on a phone, for a smoother interview experience use a tablet, desktop pc or laptop if you can - the larger screen helps to replicate an interview scenario and Zoom works better. Ensure all computer updates have been completed, turn off notifications on your devices - the last thing you need is a prompt to update software mid-way through your interview, or a calendar notification reminding you to worm the dog! While hiccups will inevitably occur when using technology, do a test run for peace of mind and aim to control what you can control.
4. Be prepared
- Do your research, understand the role and the company and think about what you might be asked during the interview. Consider keeping notes in front of you, don’t read from them, but use them as a prompt in case you get nervous. Write down some questions to ask too - it shows great initiative to have questions about the company.
5. During the interview
- Listen well, pay attention and look into the camera lens, not at yourself on the screen! (Zoom has a function to turn off the self-view, we advise using this once you're set up and in the Zoom room) Avoid distraction of items or jobs to do around your home. Staring at the oven and remembering you have to clean it won’t help your chance of landing the job - stay present! Zoom has a ‘mute’ function, it’s excellent etiquette to use this when your interviewers are speaking to reduce any background noise. Familiarise yourself with the Zoom functions so you can easily turn options on and off.
So, to recap here are the top 5 must remember to ace your Zoom interview:
- Presentation (hygiene, outfit, hair)
- Environment (lighting, quiet, private)
- Technology (Updates, microphone, camera, internet)
- Preparation (Zoom functions, role and interview questions)
- Presence (Eyes, voice, attention)
Remember, the key is to replicate a face-to-face interview situation, so take the time to set yourself up for the best chance, and we’re sure you’ll ace your next Zoom interview!
