Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Manish Rana and I’m an Edmen Residential Youth Support Worker
How old are the kids you support?
They are anywhere between 5 and 18
Run us through a typical day at work
So when you start your shift you do a handover. After this, you go through all the communication books and appointment diary and have a look to see what’s coming up for the day. I’m usually working alongside another youth worker, so we work out who’s going to take the young people to school or to any appointments on that day. Then it’s time to get ready for school and do wake up calls. Next is breakfast and then school drop off.
When I return to the house, my job will be to clean up and put the washing on, or if there’s grocery shopping I go and pick this up. The job really depends on the house and can vary day-to-day. Like for instance, now it’s school holidays so I could be taking the kids to see a movie or taking them go karting. The good thing about youth work is that no day is ever the same, which is probably why I love it. Every day you go to work there are new challenges.
What’s the hardest part about your job?
I think the hardest part is that all young people are not going to like you, which is fine, and you don’t need to be offended. It is how it is. For me, it’s important to go into the house with an open mind every day. It doesn’t matter if you had a bad day, the next day you go in with a clean slate and don’t dwell on what’s happened in the past. In this job, you have to start the day with an open mind and be like “okay it’s a new day, everything’s going to be different rather than holding on to what happened yesterday”.
What do you enjoy most about working with Edmen?
It’s been great, you’re never really by yourself working with Edmen. You can call and email them {Edmen} anytime and they are very responsive, especially Kelsey and Shaye. You can shoot them an email and they will call straight back. There’s no hesitation and I feel like I can talk to them about anything that’s happening. That's the approach they take; they never make you feel bad about anything.
Any advice for people thinking about becoming a youth worker?
I think it’s a really rewarding job. Obviously, you’re going to have bad days but you’re going to have more good days than bad – that’s in all jobs. But its quite rewarding working for Edmen and the team is really great, so if you’re thinking of joining don’t think twice. Apply and you’ll be in good hands.
